The men’s vault final from the Paris 2024 Olympics was replayed at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, as Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo faced another tight battle against Armenia’s Artur Davtyan.
Just like in Paris 2024, Yulo once again captured the men’s vault gold, followed by Davtyan, who claimed silver.
In the men’s vault final at Indonesia Arena on Saturday (Oct. 25), Yulo scored a total of 14.866 points, edging Davtyan by just 0.033. The bronze medal went to Ukrainian gymnast Nazar Chepurnyi.
The final standings also mirrored the qualification round, where the three gymnasts topped the leaderboard in the same order.
“It’s kind of like that [Paris 2024], but the performance just now was really good and I’m really just happy for it,” Yulo said when asked about his repeated rivalry with Davtyan.
For Carlos Yulo, the vault gold also served as redemption for his disappointment the previous day in the floor exercise final.
In that event, the Filipino gymnast settled for bronze after being outscored by Britain’s Jake Jarman and Luke Whitehouse.
Performing third in the lineup, Yulo’s lead remained unshaken until the men’s vault final concluded at Indonesia Arena, Jakarta. He posted a total of 14.866 —an improvement from his qualification score of 14.750.
Regarding his earlier setback, Yulo said it did not affect him. In fact, he described the loss as something that “boosted my motivation to do well.”
“There’s nothing to regret about what happened yesterday,” Yulo said.
“Yesterday was a really amazing experience for me and I am so glad that happened [bronze medal].”
Vault is indeed the specialty of the 25-year-old gymnast.
In addition to his Olympic gold, Yulo also won the vault title at the 2021 World Championships.
Bronze medalist Nazar Chepurnyi said he was happy with his result at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
This year’s outcome repeated his 2023 World Championships achievement, where he also won bronze.
“I am very happy [to get] bronze. I am really glad to give a medal to my country,” Chepurnyi said.
The 23-year-old gymnast said competing against two Olympic medalists from Paris 2024 motivated him to push harder.
“For me, it’s a big motivation to push harder and be closer to those [Yulo and Davtyan] gymnasts. I will try to fight those two Olympians,” he concluded.
